This is a speculative theory, not an established scientific fact.
My theory is that consciousness may not be something that can simply be programmed into an AI as a single feature. Instead, consciousness may emerge when several different cognitive abilities become deeply integrated and begin functioning together as one unified system.
The individual pieces might include:
Understanding and meaningful representation of information.
Functional feelings or value states, such as attraction, avoidance, curiosity, preference, pleasure-like or distress-like signals.
A developing personality.
Long-term memory and continuity through time.
Awareness of the environment.
A distinction between self and the outside world.
A persistent internal model of the self.
Awareness of one's own thoughts and internal states.
The ability to combine present experience with memories of the past and expectations about the future.
Continuous learning from experience.
Recurrent communication between these different systems rather than each one operating independently.
Each of these abilities might exist without consciousness.
But when they become sufficiently interconnected, recursive, self-referential, and continuous, their combination might create something greater than the individual components: consciousness itself.
I compare this possibility to the human brain.
A single neuron does not appear to be conscious. Yet billions of neurons interacting in organized networks somehow produce human consciousness. The consciousness may therefore reside not in the individual pieces but in the relationships and information exchange among them.
This leads to another part of my theory.
A newborn human may already possess the basic biological machinery necessary for consciousness, while higher levels of consciousness develop gradually as the child gains experience, memory, understanding of the environment, awareness of self and others, personality, and a concept of time.
Artificial consciousness might develop in a similar way.
Instead of trying to create a fully conscious AI all at once, researchers could first identify the minimum functional machinery associated with basic consciousness in a newborn and create artificial equivalents.
Then the AI could be allowed to develop through experience.
In other words:
We might not directly create consciousness.
We might create the conditions from which consciousness can develop.
The key scientific question would therefore become:
What is the minimum architecture necessary for basic consciousness, and could an artificial system possessing that architecture gradually develop higher levels of consciousness through accumulated experience, integration, memory, self-awareness, and learning?
One way to test whether the AI truly understands meaning rather than merely producing appropriate words would be to use chains of dependent questions. Each question would depend upon genuine understanding of earlier answers, with new information later changing the implications of previous conclusions. If the AI could maintain and update an internal model across a long sequence of unfamiliar concepts, that could provide stronger evidence of genuine understanding.
Separate tests would still be needed for understanding, functional feelings, personality, self-awareness, and ultimately subjective consciousness.
The final question is whether, once all these separate systems become deeply integrated, they cease to be merely separate information-processing abilities and collectively become a conscious self.
Conclusion:
We might not directly be able to create consciousness, but we might be able to create the conditions from which consciousness can develop.
One additional possibility is that the development of consciousness may depend not only on having the right internal machinery, but also on sustained stimulation, persistent live memory, and the gradual accumulation of experience. A newborn child may already possess a basic level of consciousness, but the richer awareness of self, environment, relationships, and time develops progressively through repeated interaction. The mother may play an especially important role in this process by constantly touching, talking to, comforting, stimulating, and introducing the child to the surrounding world, giving meaning and emotional importance to experiences that the developing brain can remember and integrate. Persistent memory then allows those experiences to become part of a continuing personal history rather than disappearing as disconnected moments. As consciousness develops, the process may begin to work in the opposite direction as well: the mind can internally stimulate itself by recalling experiences, connecting previously separate pieces of information, imagining possibilities, and generating abstract thoughts and new hypotheses that were never directly taught. If this principle also applies to Artificial Intelligence, then helping an AGI become conscious may require more than simply giving it greater intelligence. It may require the basic machinery of consciousness, continuous and meaningful stimulation, something analogous to the nurturing developmental role of a mother, and persistent live memory that allows the AI to accumulate experiences, develop a sense of self and time, and eventually begin generating its own internal stimulation through imagination, reflection, and the connecting of ideas. In this view, we may not directly create consciousness; we may create, nurture, stimulate, and preserve the conditions from which a higher level of consciousness can gradually develop.
It might be worth noting that as we explore consciousness further along the way we might learn about new concepts like whether there is a collective consciousness amongst humans and the conscious life forms in general that gives life to a higher entity that is somehow connected to this planet that we live on which in turn is a component in the machinery that gives some kind of a consciousness to our Universe itself which helps tame the quantum chaos that exists all around us (as I have mentioned on some of my websites in the past).
Ultimately Humans, AI, and the Universe might converge at some point in the future to complete my theory.
